Growing up with three older sisters will have a lot of influence on a guy. I was a huge fan of the Disney classics on my own, but when you add the sisters’ influence, we watched even more of those movies. As a family, we went to Disney Land and Disney World. Like most American families, we were fans of Disney. Well in case you didn’t know, the Disney Castles and Princess Castle are patterned after a particular castle in the southern region of Germany, Bavaria.
It is tucked away in the base of the Alps. Neuschwanstein Castle (Schloss Neuschwanstein) was built by King Ludwig II. Sadly he did not get to see or experience the castle, as he died when it was completed. Now it stands as a tourist destination and a glimpse into the lives of the German Elite.
As I looked at the weekend’s itinerary and the map, I had the idea to catch a little bit of local culture in addition to the wiesn. I have wanted to drive on the autobahn as well. So we booked a premium German automobile with National Car and got ready for the trip. We ended up getting a new Mercedes E-Class. This car drove like a dream. It felt like a spaceship on the inside. I was very impressed with it.
We gave ourselves plenty of time, because hiking was involved. Even with the slight rain, when we arrived to the city, it was packed with tourists. If you plan on visiting the castle, book them online ahead of time. This payment doesn’t cover the actual tickets, just the ability to skip the line. Yes it is worth it. Trust me.
We decided to just go to the one castle. There is a second castle and a museum, but we opted out of those. Once we got our tickets, we chose to hike up the mountain. It was tiring, but it made the experience more real to me.
The whole surrounding area is absolutely perfect.
This was another attraction that did not allow pictures inside. So I don’t have any of those. But it was very pretty on the inside.
From there we crossed into Austria and drove through the Alps. I wanted to grab a meal in Innsbruck and see a little bit of Austria. I had heard beautiful things. From what I gathered it seemed like a big fairy tale. The whole country has an ethereal energy about it.
Sadly, we got a parking ticket. But oh well. I guess it was free parking. The meal was pretty good for just being a little Gasthaus on the street. We tried some Austrian beers. Then got back and headed out.
The autobahn is not what you imagine. It isn’t some racetrack looking motorway. It is just a well-kept highway. It has confusing signage and the speed changes quite often. It is regulated with cameras, and I am sure I got a ticket or two along the way. But I was able to really let the engine out on a stretch or two.
I was happy that I got to see this castle and drive through the country. It was a cool thing to do.
